The Google Alexa of the spiritual world, pendulums love to answer questions. Like tarot cards, rather than “telling the future” as such, they are thought to be connected to your subconscious mind and reflect back your own energy. Simply put, deep down we already know the answer. Unlike tarot cards however, pendulums don’t go into great detail but offer a yes/ no answer to a question- which is great for simplicity’s sake. Some people even prefer to use another object as a pendulum, such as a necklace or a ring attached to a chain. So if you’re curious or intrigued, read on, and discover how to use a pendulum.
What is a pendulum?
A pendulum is an object on the end of a metal chain. Usually a crystal (for example, clear quartz or amethyst) in a pointed shape, but some are circular or made from metal or wood. Pendulums can be used for decision making or divination.
Where to buy pendulums
As they are usually made from crystals, pendulums can be bought from the same places you can buy crystals from. Think crystal shops, spirituality shops, and so on. I bought mine from Artaster Camden Town, a really awesome crystal shop located in Camden market. If you don’t have any crystal shops near you, you can also buy them online from places like Etsy or Amazon. Some people also prefer to make their own.
How to choose a pendulum
Your instinct is the best guide when choosing a pendulum, so pick the one you feel most drawn to or like the look of. Some people also go by the significance of the crystal, for example choosing a rose quartz pendulum if they want to ask questions regarding love.
How to use a pendulum
When you buy a pendulum from a shop or wherever, it has probably picked up a load of unwanted energy from other customers touching it etc. so the first thing to do is give it a good cleanse. Sage, palo santo, salt water- whatever your favourite method is, use it. It’s also a good idea to cleanse every so often once you start using it to clear any excess energy.
2. Get connected
Pendulums work by reflecting back your own energy, so before you start asking questions, make sure you get to know it. Carry it around with you for 7 days. Hold it while you’re reading, thinking, etc. Connect with it.
3. Clarify your answers
Pendulums work by giving answers to yes/ no questions, so you need to clarify the directions for each answer. Some people do this by saying “show me yes” and “show me no” and observing the movement. Others do this by asking an obvious yes/ no question instead, for example “Is my name Alice?” The main movements a pendulum can make are swinging side to side or back and forth, or circling clockwise or anti-clockwise.
4. Clear your mind
Pendulums work by connecting with your subconscious mind, so start by clearing your mind, perhaps meditating for a while, and focus on the pendulum. If you try and do a reading when you’re feeling too emotional or if there’s an answer you want, this can affect the reading, so enter a neutral state. If there’s a question that’s very emotionally charged, leave it until you can detach from the outcome.
5. Get asking!
Now you’re ready to start answering questions. The best questions to ask are specific ones, and of course they have to have a yes/ no answer. Avoid asking the same question over and over, however the great thing about pendulums is that you can ask as many follow-up questions as you like!
Pendulums can be great tools for decision making, however they shouldn’t be the be-all and end-all. Any major life decisions should include research, but beyond that your intuition is always the guide, and the pendulum is just an extension of that. And as with any for of divination, the outcome is never set in stone, your path can always be affected by free will.
